Gary Karr, leading performer on the double bass performs several pieces including one with The Electric Karrs, a rock band from Wisconsin University. Through visuals and commentary the story of Karr's career is told, and the doublebass as a serious instrument is discussed. Performance pieces by Koussevitsky, Dragonetti, Villa-Lobos ("Bachianas Brasilieras" with guitarist Frederic Hand), Henry Eccles ("Sonata" with bassist Richard Davis.) With the Electric Karrs he plays "Bassically Soul.". Karr is the seventh generation of double bass players in his family. Sequences show him practicing and playing different effects on double bass with comment on difficulty of instrument, athleticism required (Karr's father was a baseball player); one string requires 50 pounds of pressure, modern music requires frequent double stops (two strings pressed with one finger.) 1969.
