Creative Arts Television: Filmed and videotaped arts footage from 1950 to date.
Albert and David Maysles, interviewed by Jack Kroll, senior editor of Newsweek magazine, on what they then (1969) called a new technique of natural movie making, Direct Cinema. With excerpts from their first feature length film shot in this technique,"The Salesman" (about door to door sale of The Bible in working class neighborhoods of Boston). At a time when hand held cameras were not used professionallyand could not record synchronous sound, the Maysles developed techniques to make filmmaking far more mobile. They formed a two man crew and followed the salesmen around, an early example of "cinema verite." How the Maysles actually filmed, how they got people to say "yes" to being filmed. "We're not trying to make audience feel anything....our films are their own truth...the way we saw it...we're salesmen too, always selling something..." 1969. |
